Ayurveda is a 3,000-year-old Indian medical practice, which revolves around the belief that there’s a complex bond between the mind, body and soul. Ayurvedic philosophy states that there are five elements that make each person – air, space, earth, water and fire. These elements create life energies, called Doshas. There are three types of Dosha and they need to be in balance for you to be physically, mentally and emotionally healthy.

So, here are some guidelines on how to draw out your natural beauty through basic daily Ayurveda’s rituals.

According to Ayurveda, it would be ideal to be in bed before 10 pm and awake before sunrise. Since modern life doesn’t always allow this, we should strive for getting enough restful and energizing sleep every night. Furthermore, when you wake up, don’t just jump straight out of bed, but rather give yourself a few minutes to reconnect with your consciousness, to steady your breathing and think of the good things that await you during the day.

Once you’re awake, you should warm a cup of water and pour the juice of half a lemon or lime into it. That way you stimulate your liver and your digestion, which is important, since Ayurveda is, among other things, based on healthy digestion. Your diet and lifestyle are essential in this aspect of your health, so that stimulation should happen regularly, every morning. Your body detoxifies during sleep, building up matter.

However, if your digestion is slow and you can’t get rid of that matter in the morning, you should help your body by taking some natural digestive herbs. Bear in mind that your body should ideally cleanse itself before you eat and add new food to your digestive tract.

After the morning rituals, it’s time to have breakfast. Make sure the food you eat is healthy and nourishing, something that will make you feel energized and fresh, rather than heavy and slow. You should prepare your food with joy and love and chew it for a while, eating slowly and mindfully. Enjoy the smells and taste of your food. It’s important that your nutrition is based on natural and organic food, so keep your herbal tea nearby, as well as protein shakes or similar food supplements. In order to wake up your tissue and stimulate circulation, you should wash your face and eyes with lukewarm water. Use homemade masks to nourish your face, or you may opt for moisturizing masks with minerals and plant extracts instead. Scrape your tongue to remove any bacteria before taking a spoonful of coconut or sesame oil, which you then push and pull through your teeth and around your mouth for about 15 minutes. If 15 minutes is too long to begin with, you can start with five minutes and work your way up to 15. After you spit out the oil and rinse your mouth, you should use natural, herbal toothpaste to brush your teeth.

Self-massage or abhyanga can be a morning or an evening ritual, one that helps eliminate toxins from your joints and skin. Basically, you rub your arms, legs, neck and back with nourishing oil, such as coconut or almond, using slow and circular motions. It will relieve you of pain in your joints and muscles and leave your skin soft and beautiful.
